October WDNUG Meeting - Wednesday 14th October, 6:30pm
By Kirk Barrett (kirk) @ 6:55 PM :: Announcements :: 0 Comments :: 78 Views
|
The October meeting of the Wollongong .NET User Group (WDNUG) is scheduled and we have Andrew Coates from Microsoft joining us to speak on the latest version of Visual Studio Tools For Office. Many of you will have heard Andrew speak at WDNUG in the past am I'm sure you agree with me that he is not only extremely knowledgeable but also entertaining. The talk he is presenting is actually one he will be delivering at the Hong Kong TechEd in November.
Topic: Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Development
Date: 14/10/2009
Time: 6:30pm
Location: CSC Offices, Lot 1 Edney Lane, Mt St Thomas.
Difficulty: Developer
Prerequisites: Familiar with Visual Studio and Microsoft Office
Description: Most of your users spend some, if not most of their day in one Office application or another yet we insist on delivering information to them through various bespoke applications and portals which, in turn, forces them to perform expensive context switches. Now in its fourth incarnation, Visual Studio Tools 2010 for Office Development allow you to surface relevant information without forcing your users to switch context. Learn how to develop, deploy and update applications that your users will thank you for every day
LiveMeeting: If you want to be involved but can make it to the meeting let me know and we can try out the Microsoft LiveMeeting facility that Microsoft have provided for this purpose.
Note: Please RSVP to Kirk so he has an idea of how many people are coming as we will have pizza and drink again this month.

Social Innovation Camp - Wollongong Ideas Generation meeting on 27th October
By Kirk Barrett (kirk) @ 4:43 PM :: Announcements :: 0 Comments :: 100 Views
|
Dear All,
I'm trying to help raise awareness about the following event taking place in Wollongong on the evening of the 27th October:
http://asix.org.au/event/wollongong-ideas-generation-meetup
What is Social Innovation Camp?
"Social Innovation Camp is an experiment in creating social innovations for the digital age. We think the web and related technologies hold huge potential to change some pretty fundamental stuff: how people hold those in positions of power accountable; who they rely on to provide the services they need to live healthy, happy lives; or how they make a difference to something that affects them. But for any of this to happen, we have to work out what people really need and start building the technology that can help - which is what Social Innovation Camp is all about. Through unusual, creative events we bring together talented software developers and designers with social innovators to build effective web-based solutions to real social problems. "
In Australia, this initiative is being sponsored by the UNSW's Centre for Social Impact and Nonprofit Australia.
This Wollongong Ideas Generation meeting is one of a series of meetings taking place around Australia in preparation for the actual Social Innovation Camp on 5th - 7th March 2010, which will take place in Sydney.
You can find more information about SI Camp here: http://asix.org.au/sicamp
It is also worth checking out the UK's Social Innovation Camp Website, where this event originated: http://www.sicamp.org/
We need both software developers AND people from the community (particularly those already working in the community sector) to get involved with this event. So, please help spread the word.
Please note: If you would like to attend it, you must RSVP on the Website. Each ideas meeting is limited to 30 people.
Thanks,
James

June WDNUG Meeting - Wednesday 10th June, 6:30pm
By Kirk Barrett (kirk) @ 9:45 PM :: Announcements :: 0 Comments :: 151 Views

As discussed at our last meeting we will be having a look at the new Windows 7 Release Candidate and its installation experience this month. I will bring along a older laptop and PC for us to experiment with but feel free to bring along you're own gear as the idea of the evening is to work through the install scenario on a variety of different configurations.
If we have time left I may do a short adhoc presentation on customising SharePoint sites to meet your basic application needs.
I'm in the process of putting the application for funding together so we haven't yet got funding for Pizza and drink for this month's meeting.
Please RSVP to let me know if you are coming so I know we will have enough attending to make it worthwhile.

WDNUG Members - To do
By Kirk Barrett (kirk) @ 7:41 PM :: Announcements :: 0 Comments :: 238 Views

Among the changes in the way Microsoft supports User Groups there is now a User Group Support site for us to leverage in support of the activities we run such as our monthly meetings.
As part of this initiative we, as members of the Wollongong .NET User Group, need to register on the new site. Registering here will make management of WDNUG easier and provide Microsoft with more visibility of our needs as a user group.
Please visit the new User Group Support Services (UGSS) site, register yourself there and then join the Wollongong .NET User Group. If asked to enter a group password contact me via email or Messenger using kbarret3@csc.com.au and I will pass it on to you.

May WDNUG Meeting - Cloud Computing
By Kirk Barrett (kirk) @ 11:39 PM :: Announcements :: 0 Comments :: 254 Views
|
The May WDNUG meeting is on Wednesday 13/05/09, 6:30pm at the CSC Offices, Edney Lane, Mt St Thomas.
For this months meeting I've lined up Deepak Kapoor to come and talk to us on Cloud Computing and what technologies we can now, and in the future, leverage to utilise or deliver services in the 'Cloud'. Like me you've probably seen a lot of press about cloud computing and wondered what it is and how does it impact me. Here's your chance to learn more...
Please RSVP so I know how many people to expect on the night. We wont have pizza and softdrink provided by Microsoft this month while I sort out the new funding arrangements, hopefully for next month. If people would like to chip in a few dollars each I am happy to arrange for some pizza and softdrink.
Topic: Cloud Computing
Difficulty: General
Description:
Cloud Computing is the future and developers must upgrade their skills to write software for the cloud. While much has been said about Cloud Computing, confusion still remains at the basic levels? What is Cloud Computing? To get an understanding of Cloud Computing and in particular Microsoft Azure, come to WDNUG where Deepak Kapoor will present Cloud Computing for .Net Developers.

Our April WDNUG meeting is next week, Wednesday 8/04/09 at 6:30pm and I've lined up a speaker from Microsoft to come and fill us in on what all the hype is about with IE8. Multiple .NET Job Opportunities in the Illawarra
By Kirk Barrett (kirk) @ 9:13 PM :: Announcements :: 0 Comments :: 296 Views
|
Hi all,
I have been asked by an Illawarra based organisation to post the following information on their behalf regarding a number of .NET related positions that will be available in their organisation in the very near future.
Kirk
__________________________________________________
As we progress into 2009 it is becoming apparent that most market segments are being impacted by the ongoing financial crisis. However, there are pockets of good news. Our established Wollongong company has an IT department of approximately 80 and is looking to rapidly set up a dedicated team for a 12-24 month project.
This will involve permanent and contract positions for solutions/business/systems analysts, C#/.Net analyst programmers, database analyst developers, analyst testers, and project management. The target team size is between 10 and 20, with some positions being back-fill to allow current team members to transition. A combination of full-time and contract positions will be offered.
With the goal of supporting the local ICT industry, we have elected to offer the opportunity for local businesses, students and SMEs to express interest in contract or full time placements prior to officially advertising the roles.
If you are interested in discussing this further, please contact myself on query@m1e.info. Positions will be offered publically within the week for start dates as early as 1 April.

WDNUG February Meeting
By Kirk Barrett (kirk) @ 5:43 PM :: Announcements :: 0 Comments :: 244 Views
|
|
The new year is well and truly underway and the time has come to kick start WDNUG for the year. To do this our first meeting for the year is a planning meeting. This will include discussions about where you see the group going this year, what you'd like to see us cover and how we can grow the group. There are many, many .NET developers in the Illawarra region who have probably never heard of the group and what we are about and I'd like to try and build WDNUG up.
I'm also conscious that the group has run in a static fashion (same time, day of the month, format etc.) for a number of years but this doesn't have to be the case. Bring your idea's along and join in the discussion. This is your group and this is your chance to have input into how it runs and how successful it is.
Given the format I don't have a main speaker for the evening but if there is anyone in the group who'd like to share for 5 or 10 minutes some detail about something .NET related that they are working on or they learnt recently or even that they've read about let me know.
We will meet at the usual location at the regular time of 6:30pm. Pizza and softdrink WILL be served so please let me know if you can make it so we have enough to go around.

The October WDNUG meeting is on Wednesday 15th October and this month we have Tom hollander from Microsoft visitng to talk about Aspect Oriented Architecture within a .NET environment.

Bio: Tom Hollander is a Solution Architect in Microsoft’s Solutions Development Centre in Sydney, responsible for driving the technical design and delivery of complex customer projects. Prior to joining this team, Tom spent over three years in Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond working as a product manager in the patterns & practices team.
